Path, Patio, Driveway & Artificial Grass Surfaces

There are so many types of hard surfaces in gardens, and they all need a little love and care to stay clean and well-maintained!  We use a variety of cleaning methods depending on the surface type.

While we do provide pressure washing services, we usually save this powerful option as a last resort, since it can impact many surfaces and reduce their lifespan.

Let's keep your garden looking flawless!

Treatments for Garden Hard Surfaces

Whatever the hard surfaces in your garden are, be they Tarmac, Sandstone, Granite, Porcelain, Timber Decking, Gravel or even Artificial Grass we have solutions to clean, and perhaps more importantly to keep them clean.

Choosing which of our comprehensive range of Hard Surface Treatments is appropriate depends on the surface itself as well as its condition.

Make an enquiry, and we will arrange for one of our experts to inspect the surface with you and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your needs.

Pressure Washing

Sometimes, the situation calls for using the heavy-duty equipment. We utilize a whirligig machine to adjust the spray angle on the surface which is less abrasive. While this may not be perfect, it’s a more effective solution than applying strong direct pressure to removing (more) patio grouting. Sandstone can be quite delicate, and even the pressure from the whirligig can occasionally cause the brittle surface to flake. To work at lower pressures, we often pre-treat the surface. This combination yields excellent results.

Soft Washing

Regular Soft Washing with a biocide is a preferable solution to keep your patios, paths and driveways clean.  Depending on the hard surface we generally recommend 3 or 4 applications per year which works out at a similar price to 1 pressure wash, without the risk of harm to your surface caused by high pressure.

Deep Clean

When a hard surface is soiled, rather than jump for a full pressure washing we apply specialist cleaning agents to the surface.  We use different cleaning agents depending on the surface.  These are generally quite abrasive so we rinse off the surface as soon as sufficient time has passed for the cleaning agents to have taken effect.  We will often use a pressure washer for the rinsing, but with the pressure adjusted.

Cobble Lock Re-sanding

Cobble Lock, with its variety of patterns, is a great hard surface, particularly where there is a slope.  However, we could easily dedicate a full page to its maintenance requirements!

The most common fault is the sand infill between the cobbles gets washed away.   This sand infill is a crucial part of the system, which employs friction to stop the cobbles moving and lifting.  A depleted sand infill eventually leads to a complete failure of the system.

Thankfully the solution is simple.  Replace the sand infill with the correct sand... particularly after pressure washing!  We use a power broom to brush in the appropriate infill.  Dry weather and a dry surface are best for this intervention.

Weed Control

Removing weed roots from hard surfaces can be quite challenging, and it often feels pointless if they are just going to regrow.

Based on our experience, we recognize when hand-pulling weeds is ineffective and we utilize chemical treatments when weeds are actively growing.

These products tend to work best during the growth period from late Spring to Summer.

It's important to note that spraying is sensitive to weather conditions, as the leaves must be dry, and chemicals should not be applied when there is wind that could cause spray drift.

Gravel Raking

Gravel is a wonderful surface, and there is something about the crunch it makes as you're walking across it.  However it really can move around quite a lot!  Regular raking not only redistributes gravel displaced by wheeled and foot traffic, it also serves to help reduce weed growth by disturbing the weed's seed bed, & occasionally pulling the weeds out root & all.

Artificial Grass Brushing

As debris accumulates on artificial grass, smaller and decaying particles can sink into the grass pile, making them hard to remove. This creates a new seed bed, allowing weeds to take root and flourish. Over time, the blades of artificial grass can also become flattened with regular use. Our motorized brushes effectively penetrate the artificial grass pile to eliminate debris build-up while revitalizing the flattened blades.

Artificial Grass Sanding

Sanding Artificial Grass is a laborious process and often overlooked.  However, it is extremely beneficial and greatly improves the performance and longevity of the surface.  An appropriate infill layer of appropriate sand supports the artificial grass blades at the base reducing the flattening effect.  It also helps reduce foreign debris from becoming embedded deeper in the pile.

Our motorised brushes are hugely beneficial as we apply the sand which once we're finished will not be visible.

Autumn Debris Clearance

Debris left on hard surfaces can lead to unsightly stains that will eventually require cleaning. To prevent surfaces from becoming soiled we recommend regularly removing debris build-up. This is especially crucial in the Autumn, though some gardens may face this issue year-round due to wind direction. A fortnightly debris clearance is generally sufficient to prevent stains on surfaces, except in the most exacting, tree filled or downwind gardens.
