Seasonal Nutrients & Mulches

Different plants thrive better, and bloom better in different growing conditions.  Optimum growth depends on the species, the soil, the aspect, exposure & drainage.  However, we do not always have the luxury of optimum growing conditions for all of our plants.

At crucial growing phases we can assist your plant's development by strengthening the plant with a foliar feed or amending the soil to add the specific nutrients and minerals that otherwise may be lacking.

We use a variety of nutrition products depending on the plant, and depending on the season.  These include granular organic products, slow release granular products, nutrition rich mulches and specific foliar feed sprays.

Plant Support

Some plants need support for them to grow the way we want them to.  Whether you need staking to stop a shrub or tree rocking in the wind, or a framework for your climbers to cling to and be trained along we understand the growth dynamic of the plants and will ensure they are properly installed to lend stability for years to come.

Disease Treatments

Plants can suffer from a wide range of diseases.  Sometimes the treatment will involve pruning and sometimes we use specific foliar sprays or soil drenches to treat the disease.  More often we use a combination.

Upon inspection we will often spot underlying issues such as a thick layer of uncomposted leaves lodged under a hedge causing the mould & rot which is causing the problem.

In nearly every instance where a plant is suffering from disease, following treatment we will also examine for nutrient deficiencies and ensure the suffering plant receives a nutritional boost.

Pruning

Plants prefer to be pruned as specific times of the year.  It would be much simpler if they all preferred to be pruned at the same time, but frustratingly for some, this is not the case.

In addition different plants prefer different pruning approaches.  Some thrive better with selective pruning while others prefer to be simply sheared all over.

Finally, some plants respond well to a hard pruning, whereas others can only tolerate a lighter touch.

Whatever your pruning needs our experience will help you achieve the effect you envisage for your garden.

Topiary

Topiary is essentially hedge trimming, but generally on a smaller scale and always with a greater focus on the finer details.

In tandem with the actual trimming part, we also examine the nutritional needs of the plant which are often a little more demanding compared to their more plainly trimmed cousins, as well as precisely planning the trimming regime in line with the plant's preferences and growth habit.

Water & Irrigation

We do have dry periods in summer, particularly over the last few years.  You may even have been happy to notice your lawn didn't really need mowing over a particular July or August, because it had stopped growing?  While a protracted dry spell is unlikely to cause lasting damage to a lawn in Ireland's climate, the same cannot be said for many of plants in your garden.  This is particularly true for less established plants, but even mature trees are not immune to significant weakening over a protracted dry spell.

The solutions are generally very simple.  From irrigation systems with automatic timers and inbuilt rain sensors, to what I call plug & play systems that you simply attach your garden hose so the watering is done efficiently while you have a cup of tea.

Deciduous & Fruit Tree Pruning

Fruit trees require specific pruning at specific periods to optimise their fruit production.  Generally a hard pruning in winter and a light pruning in summer, although there are exceptions.  Similarly, most deciduous trees are best pruned in winter, with ornamental cherry blossoms among the more notable exceptions.

In instances where a tree is too large for our insurance policy we also work with a number of local tree surgeons to get the job done.
